✧ A red wind blew in Kufa, and a man came whose only refrain was: “O Abdullah b. Masud, the Hour has come.” He had been reclining, so he sat up and said: “The Hour will not come until no inheritance is divided and no spoils are rejoiced over.” Then he said: “An enemy will assemble against the people of Islam, and the people of Islam will assemble against them.” He gestured with his hand toward Syria. I said: “You mean the Byzantines?” He said: “Yes.” He said: “And during that fighting there will be a severe apostasy.” He said: “The Muslims will enlist a shock troop pledged to death that will not return except victorious. They will fight until night separates them, and both sides will withdraw, neither victorious, and the shock troop will be annihilated. Then the Muslims will enlist a shock troop pledged to death that will not return except victorious. They will fight until night separates them, and both sides will withdraw, neither victorious, and the shock troop will be annihilated. Then the Muslims will enlist a shock troop pledged to death that will not return except victorious. They will fight until evening, and both sides will withdraw, neither victorious, and the shock troop will be annihilated. On the fourth day, the remainder of the people of Islam will advance against them, and God, Mighty and Majestic, will turn the tide against them. They will fight a battle the like of which—either he said: “has never been seen,” or: “we have never seen the like of it”—until a bird passing by their flanks would not pass them without falling dead. He said: “Then the sons of one father—if they had been a hundred—will count themselves and find that only one man among them remains. So what spoils can be rejoiced over? What inheritance can be divided?” He said: “While they are in that state, they hear of a calamity greater than that. A cry comes to them that the Dajjal has taken their place among their offspring, so they abandon what is in their hands and turn back. They send out ten horsemen as a vanguard.” The Messenger of God ﷺ said: “I know their names and the names of their fathers, and the colors of their horses. They are the best horsemen on the face of the earth on that day.”
