✧ Umar stood up as a preacher. He praised Allah and extolled Him, and he mentioned the Prophet of Allah ﷺ and Abu Bakr. Then he said: 'I saw a vision as if a rooster pecked me twice. I do not think this is except for the approach of my appointed time. Some people are ordering me to appoint a successor. Allah, Mighty and Majestic, would not let His caliphate and His religion be lost, nor what He sent His Prophet ﷺ with. If something happens to me soon, the caliphate is a consultation among these six men with whom the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was pleased when he died. Whichever of them you pledge allegiance to, then listen to him and obey. I know that some men will criticize this matter. I fought them with this hand of mine for Islam. If they do so, they are the enemies of Allah, the disbelievers, the misguided. By Allah, I do not leave behind anything more important to me than the matter of kalalah. I asked the Prophet of Allah ﷺ about it, and he was never harsher to me about anything than he was about it, until he poked with his hand or his finger in my chest or my side and said: "O Umar, the verse that was revealed in summer, at the end of Surah al-Nisa, is sufficient for you." If I live, I will judge it with a judgement that no one who reads the Quran or does not read the Quran will differ about.' Then he said: 'O Allah, I call You to witness over the governors of the garrison cities. I sent them to teach the people their religion and the Sunnah of their Prophet, to distribute their fay' among them, and to act justly toward them. Whatever is unclear to them, they raise it to me.' Then he said: 'O people, you eat from two plants that I consider nothing but foul: this garlic and onion. I used to see a man in the time of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ whose odour was detected, and he would be taken by the hand and led out to al-Baqi'. So whoever must eat them, let him kill their odour by cooking.' He said: Umar delivered this sermon on Friday, and he was struck on Wednesday, four nights remaining of Dhu al-Hijjah.
