✧ I was suffering from a severe, heavy menstrual bleeding. I came to the Messenger of God ﷺ to ask his ruling and inform him. I found him in the house of my sister Zaynab bt. Jaḥsh. She said: I said: O Messenger of God, I have a need to bring to you. He said: What is it? I said: O Messenger of God, I am suffering from heavy, severe menstrual bleeding. What do you think about it? It has prevented me from prayer and fasting. He said: I prescribe for you cotton, for it removes the blood. She said: It is more than that. He said: Then use a cloth. She said: It is more than that. He said: Then use a tight bandage. She said: It gushes profusely. He said to her: I will command you to two matters; whichever of them you do, it will suffice you in place of the other, and if you are able to do both, you know best. He said to her: This is only a strike from the strikes of Satan, so count your menses as six or seven days according to God’s knowledge, then perform ghusl. Then when you see that you have become pure and fully cleansed, pray for twenty-four nights or twenty-three nights and their days, and fast, for that will suffice you. Do likewise each month as women menstruate and become pure, according to the timing of their menstruation and purity. If you are able to delay ẓuhr and hasten ʿaṣr, then perform ghusl and pray ẓuhr and ʿaṣr together; then delay maghrib and hasten ʿishā’, then perform ghusl and combine the two prayers, do that; and perform ghusl with fajr and pray. Do that, and pray and fast if you are able to do so. And the Messenger of God ﷺ said: This is the more preferable of the two matters to me.

What scholars said about it

In their own words, as Hadith Unlocked records them. They are shown, not summarised into a grade.

machine translationIt is not authentic in their view from any angle, because it is from the narration of Ibn ʿAqīl, and they have unanimously agreed to abandon his hadith.

    in مسند أحمد, p. 28067
  • Khaṭṭābī

machine translationSome scholars abandoned relying on it as evidence, because its narrator, Ibn ʿAqīl, is not that reliable.

    in مسند أحمد, p. 28067
  • Abū Bakr Aḥmad b. al-Ḥusayn al-Bayhaqī

machine translationIbn ʿAqīl was alone in narrating it, and there is disagreement about relying on him as evidence.

    in مسند أحمد, p. 28067
  • Ibn Ḥazm

machine translationHe rejected it on several grounds. The first is the break in the chain between Ibn Jurayj and Ibn ʿAqīl; he claimed that Ibn Jurayj did not hear it from Ibn ʿAqīl, and that between them in it is al-Nuʿmān b. Rāshid, and he mentioned it with his chain and declared this al-Nuʿmān weak. The second is that Sharīk and Zuhayr b. Muḥammad narrated it from Ibn ʿAqīl, and both are weak. The third is that ʿUmar b. Ṭalḥah was never created, and no son of Ṭalḥah named ʿUmar is known.

machine translationʿAbdullāh b. Muḥammad b. ʿAqīl narrates it, and there is disagreement about what he transmitted. Abū Ayyūb al-Afrīqī, ʿAbdullāh b. ʿAlī, narrated it from ʿAbdullāh b. Muḥammad b. ʿAqīl from Jābir, and he erred in it. He was contradicted by ʿUbaydullāh b. ʿAmr, Sharīk, Ibn Jurayj, ʿAmr b. Thābit, Zuhayr b. Muḥammad and Ibrāhīm b. Abī Yaḥyā, who narrated it from Ibn ʿAqīl from Ibrāhīm b. Muḥammad b. Ṭalḥah from his uncle ʿImrān b. Ṭalḥah from his mother Ḥamnah bint Jaḥsh, and this is the correct version.
