حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى حَدَّثَنَا حُمَيْدٌ عَنْ أَنَسٍ
وَافَقْتُ رَبِّي فِي ثَلَاثٍ - وَوَافَقَنِي رَبِّي فِي ثَلَاثٍ - قُلْتُ: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ، لَوِ اتَّخَذْتَ مِنْ مَقَامِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ مُصَلًّى ؟ فَأَنْزَلَ اللهُ: وَاتَّخِذُوا مِنْ مَقَامِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ مُصَلًّى قُلْتُ: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ، إِنَّهُ يَدْخُلُ عَلَيْكَ الْبَرُّ وَالْفَاجِرُ، فَلَوْ أَمَرْتَ أُمَّهَاتِ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ بِالْحِجَابِ، فَأَنْزَلَ اللهُ آيَةَ الْحِجَابِ، وَبَلَغَنِي مُعَاتَبَةُ النَّبِيِّ [عَلَيْهِ السَّلَامُ] بَعْضَ نِسَائِهِ قَالَ: فَاسْتَقْرَيْتُ أُمَّهَاتِ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ، فَدَخَلْتُ عَلَيْهِنَّ، فَجَعَلْتُ أَسْتَقْرِيهِنَّ وَاحِدَةً وَاحِدَةً: وَاللهِ لَئِنِ انْتَهَيْتُنَّ، وَإِلَّا لَيُبَدِّلَنَّ اللهُ رَسُولَهُ خَيْرًا مِنْكُنَّ قَالَ: فَأَتَيْتُ عَلَى بَعْضِ نِسَائِهِ، قَالَتْ: يَا عُمَرُ، أَمَا فِي رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ مَا يَعِظُ نِسَاءَهُ حَتَّى تَكُونَ أَنْتَ تَعِظُهُنَّ ؟ فَأَنْزَلَ اللهُ [عَزَّ وَجَلَّ]: عَسَى رَبُّهُ إِنْ طَلَّقَكُنَّ أَنْ يُبْدِلَهُ أَزْوَاجًا خَيْرًا مِنْكُنَّ.

✧ I was in accord with my Lord in three things — and my Lord was in accord with me in three things. I said: O Messenger of Allah, if only you would adopt the station of Ibrahim as a place of prayer? Then Allah revealed: 'And adopt the station of Ibrahim as a place of prayer.' I said: O Messenger of Allah, both the righteous and the wicked enter upon you, so if only you would command the Mothers of the Believers to observe the veil. Then Allah revealed the verse of the veil. And I learned of the Prophet's ﷺ reproof of some of his wives. He said: So I went to the Mothers of the Believers, and I began to address them one by one: By Allah, if you desist, otherwise Allah will exchange His Messenger for better wives than you. Then I came to one of his wives, and she said: O Umar, is it not enough that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ admonishes his wives, that you should admonish them? Then Allah [Mighty and Majestic] revealed: 'It may be that his Lord, if he divorces you, will give him in exchange wives better than you.'
