✧ I went on a military expedition with Zayd b. Suhan and Salman b. Rabi'ah, and I found a whip; I took it. They said to me, 'Throw it away.' I said, 'No, but I will announce it. If I find someone who recognizes it, then (I will return it); otherwise I will benefit from it.' They refused, and I refused them. When we returned from our expedition, I performed Hajj and came to Madinah. I met Ubayy b. Ka'b and mentioned to him their statement and my statement to them. He said, 'I found a purse containing a hundred dinars in the time of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. I came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and mentioned that to him. He said, "Announce it for a year." I announced it for a year but found no one who recognized it. I came to him and said, "I found no one who recognizes it." He said, "Announce it for a year." Three times, and I do not know whether he said that to him in one year or in three years. Then he said to me the fourth time, "Note its number and its tie. If you find someone who recognizes it, then (return it); otherwise, benefit from it."'
