حَدَّثَنَا هَاشِمٌ حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ عَنِ الْحَكَمِ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ مُحَمَّدَ بْنَ كَعْبٍ الْقُرَظِيَّ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ زَيْدَ بْنَ أَرْقَمَ قَالَ لَمَّا قَالَ عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ أُبَيٍّ مَا قَالَ

لَا تُنْفِقُوا عَلَى مَنْ عِنْدَ رَسُولِ اللهِ وَقَالَ لَئِنْ رَجَعْنَا إِلَى الْمَدِينَةِ قَالَ فَسَمِعْتُهُ فَأَتَيْتُ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ فَذَكَرْتُ ذَلِكَ لَهُ قَالَ فَلَامَنِي نَاسٌ مِنَ الْأَنْصَارِ قَالَ وَجَاءَ هُوَ فَحَلَفَ مَا قَالَ ذَاكَ فَرَجَعْتُ إِلَى الْمَنْزِلِ فَنِمْتُ قَالَ فَأَتَانِي رَسُولُ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ أَوْ بَلَغَنِي فَأَتَيْتُ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ فَقَالَ إِنَّ اللهَ ﷻ قَدْ صَدَّقَكَ وَعَذَرَكَ فَنَزَلَتْ هَذِهِ الْآيَةُ {هُمُ الَّذِينَ يَقُولُونَ لَا تُنْفِقُوا عَلَى مَنْ عِنْدَ رَسُولِ اللهِ} [المنافقون 7]

Translation

✧ Do not spend on those who are with the Messenger of God, and he said: If we return to Madinah. He said: I heard it, went to the Prophet ﷺ, and mentioned that to him. He said: Some of the Ansar blamed me. He said: He came and swore he had not said that. I returned to my lodging and slept. He said: The messenger of the Messenger of God ﷺ came to me, or it reached me, so I went to the Prophet ﷺ. He said: God, exalted be He, has confirmed you and excused you. Then this verse was revealed: {They are the ones who say, 'Do not spend on those who are with the Messenger of God'} [Quran 63:7].
