✧ My Father, Tha'labah al-Khushani

حَدَّثَنَا زَيْدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى الدِّمَشْقِيُّ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ الْعَلَاءِ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ مُسْلِمَ بْنَ مِشْكَمٍ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ الْخُشَنِيَّ يَقُولُ

قُلْتُ: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ، أَخْبِرْنِي بِمَا يَحِلُّ لِي، وَيُحَرَّمُ عَلَيَّ، قَالَ: فَصَعَّدَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ، وَصَوَّبَ فِيَّ النَّظَرَ، فَقَالَ: « الْبِرُّ مَا سَكَنَتْ إِلَيْهِ النَّفْسُ، وَاطْمَأَنَّ إِلَيْهِ الْقَلْبُ، وَالْإِثْمُ مَا لَمْ تَسْكُنْ إِلَيْهِ النَّفْسُ، وَلَمْ يَطْمَئِنَّ إِلَيْهِ الْقَلْبُ، وَإِنْ أَفْتَاكَ الْمُفْتُونَ ». وَقَالَ: « لَا تَقْرَبْ لَحْمَ الْحِمَارِ الْأَهْلِيِّ، وَلَا ذَا نَابٍ مِنَ السِّبَاعِ ».

✧ I said: 'O Messenger of God, tell me what is lawful for me and what is forbidden to me.' He said: 'The Prophet ﷺ raised his eyes and looked at me, then said: 'Righteousness is what the soul feels at ease with and the heart is tranquil about, and sin is what the soul does not feel at ease with and the heart is not tranquil about, even if the muftis give you a ruling.' And he said: 'Do not approach the meat of the domestic donkey, nor any fanged beast of prey.'
