✧ I campaigned with the Messenger of God ﷺ at Khaybar while the people were hungry. We captured some domestic donkeys there and slaughtered them. The Prophet ﷺ was told, and he ordered ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. ʿAwf, who announced to the people: 'The meat of domestic donkeys is not lawful for anyone who bears witness that I am the Messenger of God.' He said: 'We found onions and garlic in its gardens. The people were hungry, and they exerted themselves and returned [to the mosque]. The mosque smelled of onions and garlic, so the Messenger of God ﷺ said: 'Whoever eats this foul herb should not come near us.' He said: 'Plunder is not lawful, nor is every fanged beast of prey, nor is al-mujaththamah.'
