✧ ‘Abdullah b. Sahl, brother of Banu Harithah, went out with a group of Banu Harithah to Khaybar to buy dates from there. ‘Abdullah b. Sahl was attacked, his neck was broken, then he was thrown into a canal of the canals of Khaybar's springs. His companions missed him, searched for him until they found him, and then buried him. Then they came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. His brother ‘Abd al-Rahman b. Sahl came forward, along with his paternal cousins Huwayyisah and Muhayyisah, who were older than ‘Abd al-Rahman. ‘Abd al-Rahman was the foremost of the people and the claimant of the blood, so he advanced and spoke to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ before his paternal cousins Huwayyisah and Muhayyisah. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “The elder, the elder.” So ‘Abd al-Rahman stepped back, Huwayyisah spoke, then Muhayyisah spoke, then ‘Abd al-Rahman spoke. They said: “O Messenger of Allah, our companion was attacked and killed, and we have no enemy in Khaybar except the Jews.” The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “Name your killer, then swear fifty oaths against him, then you may take him.” They said: “O Messenger of Allah, we cannot swear about what we did not witness.” He said: “Then let them swear fifty oaths to you and be absolved of your companion's blood.” They said: “O Messenger of Allah, we cannot accept the oaths of the Jews, for the disbelief they are in is greater than that they would swear falsely on a sin.” So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ paid his blood money from his own resources: one hundred camels. Sahl said: By Allah, I will never forget a red young she-camel from them that kicked me while I was gathering them.
