حَدَّثَنَا يَزِيدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ رَبِّهِ حَدَّثَنَا الْحَارِثُ بْنُ عَبِيدَةَ حَدَّثَنِي مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ مُجَبَّرٍ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنْ جَدِّهِ
أَنَّ عُثْمَانَ أَشْرَفَ عَلَى الَّذِينَ حَصَرُوهُ، فَسَلَّمَ عَلَيْهِمْ، فَلَمْ يَرُدُّوا عَلَيْهِ، فَقَالَ عُثْمَانُ: أَفِي الْقَوْمِ طَلْحَةُ؟ قَالَ طَلْحَةُ: نَعَمْ. قَالَ: فَإِنَّا لِلهِ وَإِنَّا إِلَيْهِ رَاجِعُونَ، أُسَلِّمُ عَلَى قَوْمٍ أَنْتَ فِيهِمْ فَلَا يَرُدُّونَ. قَالَ: قَدْ رَدَدْتُ. قَالَ: مَا هَكَذَا الرَّدُّ أُسْمِعُكَ، وَلَا تُسْمِعُنِي يَا طَلْحَةُ، أَنْشُدُكَ اللهَ، أَسَمِعْتَ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ يَقُولُ: لَا يُحِلُّ دَمَ الْمُسْلِمِ إِلَّا وَاحِدَةٌ مِنْ ثَلَاثٍ: أَنْ يَكْفُرَ بَعْدَ إِيمَانِهِ، أَوْ يَزْنِيَ بَعْدَ إِحْصَانِهِ، أَوْ يَقْتُلَ نَفْسًا، فَيُقْتَلَ بِهَا. قَالَ: اللَّهُمَّ نَعَمْ، فَكَبَّرَ عُثْمَانُ، فَقَالَ: وَاللهِ مَا أَنْكَرْتُ اللهَ مُنْذُ عَرَفْتُهُ، وَلَا زَنَيْتُ فِي جَاهِلِيَّةٍ وَلَا [فِي] إِسْلَامٍ، وَقَدْ تَرَكْتُهُ فِي الْجَاهِلِيَّةِ تَكَرُّهًا، وَفِي الْإِسْلَامِ تَعَفُّفًا، وَمَا قَتَلْتُ نَفْسًا يَحِلُّ بِهَا قَتْلِي.

✧ Uthman looked down upon those who had besieged him and greeted them, but they did not return his greeting. Uthman said: Is Talhah among the people? Talhah said: Yes. He said: Truly, to Allah we belong and to Him we return. I greet a people among whom you are, and they do not respond. Talhah said: I did respond. He said: That is not how a response should be—I can make you hear, but you do not make me hear. O Talhah, I adjure you by Allah, did you hear the Prophet ﷺ say: The blood of a Muslim is not lawful except for one of three reasons: that he disbelieves after his faith, or commits adultery after being married, or kills a soul and is killed for it? He said: O Allah, yes. Then Uthman said the takbir and said: By Allah, I have not denied Allah since I came to know Him, nor have I committed adultery in the time of ignorance or in Islam. I left it in the time of ignorance out of aversion, and in Islam out of chastity, and I have not killed a soul for which my killing would be lawful.
