✧ I entered upon Abu 'Ubaydah ibn al-Jarrah during his illness, and his wife Tuhayfah was sitting at his head, and he was facing the wall. I said: How did Abu 'Ubaydah spend the night? She said: He spent the night with reward. He said: By God, I did not spend the night with reward. He said: It was as if the people were upset, so he said: Will you not ask me about what I said? They said: We did not like what you said, so how could we ask you? He said: I heard the Messenger of God ﷺ say: Whoever spends a surplus expenditure in the path of God, it is multiplied by seven hundred; and whoever spends on his family, or visits a sick person, or removes something harmful, the good deed is multiplied by ten; and fasting is a shield as long as one does not tear it; and whoever God tests with an affliction in his body, it is an expiation for him.
