✧ We asked Ali about the voluntary prayers of the Prophet ﷺ during the day. He said: ‘You will not be able to do them.’ We said: ‘Tell us, and we will take from them what we can.’ He said: ‘When the Prophet ﷺ prayed Fajr, he would wait until the sun was here—meaning from the east—at the same height as it is at the time of ʿAsr from here—meaning from the west—then he would stand and pray two rakʿahs. Then he would wait until the sun was here—meaning from the east—at the same height as it is at the time of Zuhr from here—meaning from the west—then he would stand and pray four rakʿahs, and four before Zuhr when the sun declines, and two after it, and four before ʿAsr, separating between each two rakʿahs with the taslim upon the angels brought near, the prophets, and those with them of the believers and Muslims.’ Ali said: ‘These are sixteen rakʿahs of the voluntary prayer of the Messenger of God ﷺ during the day, and few persist in them.’
