✧ ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb saw ʿUṭārid al-Tamīmī displaying in the market a striped silk garment, and he was a man who frequented kings and obtained from them. ʿUmar said, “O Messenger of God, I saw ʿUṭārid displaying in the market a striped silk garment; if only you would buy it and wear it for the Arab delegations when they come to you” — and I think he said, “and wear it on Friday.” The Messenger of God ﷺ said to him, “Only one who has no share in the Hereafter wears silk in this world.” Later, the Messenger of God ﷺ was brought striped silk garments, and he sent ʿUmar a garment, sent Usāma a garment, and gave ʿAlī a garment, saying, “Tear it into veils among your women.” ʿUmar came with his garment and said, “O Messenger of God, you sent me this, yet yesterday you said about ʿUṭārid’s garment what you said.” He said, “I did not send it to you to wear it, but I sent it to you to benefit from it.” As for Usāma, he went about in his garment, and the Messenger of God ﷺ looked at him with a look by which he knew that the Messenger of God ﷺ disapproved of what he had done. He said, “O Messenger of God, why do you look at me? You sent it to me.” He said, “I did not send it to you to wear it, but I sent it to you to tear it into veils among your women.”
