حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو خَيْثَمَةَ، حَدَّثَنَا حَبَّانُ بْنُ هِلَالٍ، حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ، قَالَ عَاصِمُ بْنُ عُبَيْدِ اللهِ: أَخْبَرَنِي، قَالَ: سَمِعْتُ سَالِمًا يُحَدِّثُ، عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ، أَنَّ عُمَرَ، قَالَ:

يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ، أَرَأَيْتَ مَا نَعْمَلُ فِيهِ ؟ فِي أَمْرٍ قَدْ فُرِغَ مِنْهُ أَوْ فِي أَمْرٍ مُبْتَدَأٍ أَوْ مُبْتَدَعٍ ؟ قَالَ: فِيمَا قَدْ فُرِغَ - شَكَّ شُعْبَةُ - مِنْهُ اعْمَلْ يَا ابْنَ الْخَطَّابِ فَكُلٌّ مُيَسَّرٌ، أَمَّا مَنْ كَانَ مِنْ أَهْلِ السَّعَادَةِ، فَإِنَّهُ يَعْمَلُ لِلسَّعَادَةِ، وَمَنْ كَانَ مِنْ أَهْلِ الشَّقَاءِ، فَإِنَّهُ يَعْمَلُ لِلشَّقَاءِ

✧ “O Messenger of God, tell us about what we do: is it in a matter already decreed or in a matter newly begun or innovated?” He said, “In what has already been decreed—Shuʿba was uncertain—so act, O Ibn al-Khattab, for everyone is facilitated. As for one who is among the people of felicity, he will act for felicity, and one who is among the people of wretchedness, he will act for wretchedness.”
