✧ Ibn Mas'ud sold al-Ash'ath some slaves from the slaves of the emirate. He came to him seeking payment, and they differed over the price. Ibn Mas'ud said: 'Do you accept that I judge between me and you with the judgment of the Messenger of God ﷺ? When the two parties to a sale differ, the word is what the seller says, or they return the goods.'

  • Dāraquṭnī

machine translationThe preserved (maḥfūẓ) version is the mursal one, meaning al-Qāsim from Ibn Masʿūd.

  • ʿAbd al-ʿAẓīm al-Mudhirī

machine translationThis hadith has been narrated through several routes from ʿAbdullāh b. Masʿūd, none of which is established.

  • ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. al-Jawzī

machine translationThe hadiths of this chapter are open to criticism, for they are mursal reports (marāsīl) and weak (ḍaʿīf). Abū ʿUbaydah did not hear from his father, nor did ʿAbd al-Raḥmān; al-Qāsim did not hear from Ibn Masʿūd, nor did ʿAwn b. ʿAbdullāh. Al-Dāraquṭnī narrated it with various wordings and with weak chains, among them Ibn ʿAyyāsh, Muḥammad b. Abī Laylā, al-Ḥasan b. ʿUmārah and Ibn al-Marzubān, all of whom are weak.

machine translationWhat appears is that the hadith of Ibn Masʿūd, taken with all its routes together, has a basis; rather, it is a good (ḥasan) hadith that may be used as evidence, though there is a difference in its wording.

  • Abū Bakr Aḥmad b. al-Ḥusayn al-Bayhaqī
