حَدَّثَنَا الْحَسَنُ بْنُ عَرَفَةَ، حَدَّثَنَا الْمُبَارَكُ بْنُ سَعِيدٍ، أَخُو سُفْيَانَ الثَّوْرِيِّ، عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ مَسْرُوقٍ، عَنْ حَبِيبٍ، عَنْ عَبْدِ خَيْرٍ الْهَمْدَانِيِّ قَالَ:

سَمِعْتُ عَلِيَّ بْنَ أَبِي طَالِبٍ يَقُولُ عَلَى هَذَا الْمِنْبَرِ: أَلَا أُخْبِرُكُمْ بِخَيْرِ هَذِهِ الْأُمَّةِ بَعْدَ نَبِيِّهَا ؟ قَالَ: فَذَكَرَ أَبَا بَكْرٍ قَالَ: ثُمَّ قَالَ: أَلَا أُخْبِرُكُمْ بِالثَّانِي ؟ قَالَ: فَذَكَرَ عُمَرَ بْنَ الْخَطَّابِ قَالَ: ثُمَّ قَالَ: لَئِنْ شِئْتُ لَأَخْبَرْتُكُمْ بِالثَّالِثِ، قَالَ: ثُمَّ سَكَتَ، قَالَ: ثُمَّ ظَنَنَّا أَنَّهُ يَعْنِي نَفْسَهُ

✧ I heard Ali ibn Abi Talib say on this pulpit: Shall I not inform you of the best of this nation after its Prophet? He said: Then he mentioned Abu Bakr. He said: Then he said: Shall I not inform you of the second? He said: Then he mentioned Umar ibn al-Khattab. He said: Then he said: If I wished, I would inform you of the third. He said: Then he was silent. He said: Then we thought that he meant himself.
