حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو خَيْثَمَةَ، حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ فُضَيْلٍ، حَدَّثَنَا مُطَرِّفُ بْنُ طَرِيفٍ، عَنْ أَبِي الْجَهْمِ، عَنْ أَبِي الرَّضْرَاضِ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ، قَالَ:

كُنَّا نُسَلِّمُ عَلَى رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فِي الصَّلَاةِ فَيَرُدُّ عَلَيْنَا، فَلَمَّا أَنْ كَانَ ذَاتَ يَوْمٍ سَلَّمْتُ عَلَيْهِ، فَلَمْ يَرُدَّ عَلَيَّ، فَوَجَدْتُ فِي نَفْسِي، فَلَمَّا فَرَغَ قُلْتُ: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ، كُنْتُ إِذَا سَلَّمْتُ عَلَيْكَ فِي الصَّلَاةِ رَدَدْتَ عَلَيَّ ؟ قَالَ: فَقَالَ: إِنَّ اللهَ يُحْدِثُ مِنْ أَمْرِهِ مَا شَاءَ

Translation

✧ We used to greet the Messenger of Allah ﷺ during prayer and he would respond to us. Then one day I greeted him and he did not respond to me. I felt something in myself. When he finished, I said: 'O Messenger of Allah, when I greeted you during prayer, you used to respond to me.' He said: 'Indeed, Allah brings about whatever He wills of His command.'
