حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو سَعِيدٍ، حَدَّثَنَا مَنْصُورُ بْنُ وَرْدَانَ، حَدَّثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْأَعْلَى، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، عَنْ أَبِي الْبَخْتَرِيِّ، عَنْ عَلِيٍّ، قَالَ:

لَمَّا نَزَلَتْ: وَلِلَّهِ عَلَى النَّاسِ حِجُّ الْبَيْتِ مَنِ اسْتَطَاعَ إِلَيْهِ سَبِيلا، قَالَ الْمُؤْمِنُونَ: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ، أَفِي كُلِّ عَامٍ ؟ مَرَّتَيْنِ. قَالَ: فَسَكَتَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ، قَالُوا: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ، أَفِي كُلِّ عَامٍ ؟ مَرَّتَيْنِ. قَالَ: لَا، وَلَوْ قُلْتُ نَعَمْ لَوَجَبَتْ، فَأَنْزَلَ اللهُ: يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا لا تَسْأَلُوا عَنْ أَشْيَاءَ إِنْ تُبْدَ لَكُمْ تَسُؤْكُمْ

Translation

✧ When it was revealed: 'And [due] to God from the people is a pilgrimage to the House—for whoever is able to find thereto a way' [Quran 3:97], the believers said: 'O Messenger of God, is it every year? Twice?' He said: The Messenger of God ﷺ remained silent. They said: 'O Messenger of God, is it every year? Twice?' He said: 'No, and if I had said yes, it would have become obligatory.' Then God sent down: 'O you who have believed, do not ask about things which, if they are shown to you, will distress you' [Quran 5:101].
