حَدَّثَنَا إِسْمَاعِيلُ بْنُ مُوسَى، حَدَّثَنَا الرَّبِيعُ بْنُ سَهْلٍ الْفَزَارِيُّ، حَدَّثَنِي سَعِيدُ بْنُ عُبَيْدٍ، عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ رَبِيعَةَ، قَالَ:
سَمِعْتُ عَلِيًّا عَلَى الْمِنْبَرِ، وَأَتَاهُ رَجُلٌ، فَقَالَ: يَا أَمِيرَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ، مَا لِي أَرَاكَ تَسْتَحِيلُ النَّاسَ اسْتِحَالَةَ الرَّجُلِ إِبِلَهُ، أَبِعَهْدٍ مِنْ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ أَوْ شَيْئًا رَأَيْتَهُ ؟ قَالَ: وَاللهِ مَا كَذَبْتُ وَلَا كُذِبْتُ، وَلَا ضَلَلْتُ وَلَا ضُلَّ بِي، بَلْ عَهْدٌ مِنْ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ عَهِدَهُ إِلَيَّ، وَقَدْ خَابَ مَنِ افْتَرَى
Translation

✧ I heard Ali on the pulpit, and a man came to him and said: O Commander of the Faithful, why do I see you treating people the way a man treats his camels? Is it by a covenant from the Messenger of God ﷺ or something you have seen? He said: By God, I have not lied, nor have I been lied to; I have not strayed, nor have I been led astray. Rather, it is a covenant from the Messenger of God ﷺ which he entrusted to me. And he who fabricates has failed.
