حَدَّثَنَا وَهْبُ بْنُ بَقِيَّةَ الْوَاسِطِيُّ، حَدَّثَنَا خَالِدٌ، عَنِ الْعَلَاءِ بْنِ الْمُسَيِّبِ، عَنْ عَمْرِو بْنِ مُرَّةَ، عَنْ أَبِي عُبَيْدَةَ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ مَسْعُودٍ، عَنِ النَّبِيِّ - ﷺ قَالَ:

إِنَّهُ مَنْ كَانَ قَبْلَكُمْ مِنْ بَنِي إِسْرَائِيلَ كَانَ إِذَا عَمِلَ الْعَامِلُ مِنْهُمْ بِالْخَطِيئَةِ نَهَاهُ النَّاهِي تَعْذِيرًا، فَإِذَا كَانَ مِنَ الْغَدِ جَالَسَهُ، وَآكَلَهُ، وَشَارَبَهُ، كَأَنْ لَمْ يَرَهُ عَلَى الْخَطِيئَةِ بِالْأَمْسِ، فَلَمَّا رَأَى اللهُ ذَلِكَ مِنْهُمْ ضَرَبَ بِقُلُوبِ بَعْضِهِمْ عَلَى بَعْضٍ، وَلَعَنَهُمْ عَلَى لِسَانِ نَبِيِّهِمْ دَاوُدَ، وَعِيسَى ابْنِ مَرْيَمَ، ذَلِكَ بِمَا عَصَوْا وَكَانُوا يَعْتَدُونَ، وَالَّذِي نَفْسِي بِيَدِهِ، لَتَأْمُرُنَّ بِالْمَعْرُوفِ، وَلَتَنْهَوُنَّ عَنِ الْمُنْكَرِ، وَلَتَأْطُرُنَّهُ عَلَى الْحَقِّ أَطْرًا، أَوْ لَيَضْرِبَنَّ اللهُ قُلُوبَ بَعْضِكُمْ بِبَعْضٍ، وَيَلْعَنَكُمْ كَمَا لَعَنَهُمْ

Translation

✧ Indeed, those before you from the Children of Israel, when a man among them committed a sin, someone would forbid him as a mere excuse. Then the next day he would sit with him, eat with him, and drink with him, as if he had not seen him commit the sin the day before. When Allah saw that from them, He struck the hearts of some of them against others and cursed them on the tongue of their Prophet Dawud and Isa b. Maryam. That was because they disobeyed and used to transgress. By the One in whose hand is my soul, you must enjoin good and forbid evil, and you must compel him to adhere to the truth forcefully, or Allah will strike the hearts of some of you against others and curse you as He cursed them.
