حَدَّثَنَا نُعَيْمُ بْنُ هَيْصَمٍ، حَدَّثَنَا خَالِدٌ يَعْنِي الْوَاسِطِيَّ، عَنْ يَحْيَى الْجَبَّارِ، عَنْ أَبِي مَاجِدَةَ، عَنِ ابْنِ مَسْعُودٍ قَالَ:

سَأَلْنَا نَبِيَّنَا ﷺ عَنِ السَّيْرِ بِالْجِنَازَةِ، فَقَالَ: مَا دُونَ الْخَبَبِ، فَإِنْ يَكُ خَيْرًا يُعَجَّلْ بِهِ، وَإِنْ يَكُ سِوَى ذَلِكَ فَبُعْدًا لِأَهْلِ النَّارِ، الْجِنَازَةُ مَتْبُوعَةٌ، وَلَيْسَتْ بِمُتَّبِعَةٍ، لَيْسَ مِنْهَا مَنْ تَقَدَّمَهَا

Translation

✧ We asked our Prophet ﷺ about walking with the funeral procession. He said, 'Less than a brisk pace. If it is good, it will be hastened; if it is other than that, then far be it for the people of the Fire. The funeral procession is followed, not following. It is not from it whoever goes ahead of it.'
