✧ A man among the Children of Israel, when he saw his brother committing a sin, would forbid him as an excuse. Then the next day, what he saw of him did not prevent him from being his table companion, his associate, and his drinking companion. When Allah saw that from them, He struck the hearts of some of them against others and cursed them upon the tongue of their prophet Da'ud and 'Isa son of Maryam. That was because they disobeyed and were transgressing. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'By Him in Whose hand is my soul, you must enjoin what is right, forbid what is wrong, seize the hand of the wrongdoer, and compel him to the truth firmly, or Allah will strike the hearts of some of you against others and curse you as He cursed them.'

machine translationMuʾammal narrates it from al-Thawrī, from ʿAlī b. Badhīmah, from Abū ʿUbaydah, from Masrūq, from ʿAbdullāh, and he erred in mentioning Masrūq. Abū Bakr al-Ḥanafī, ʿAlī b. Qādim and ʿAbbād b. Mūsā contradicted him, and narrated it from al-Thawrī, from ʿAlī b. Badhīmah, from Abū ʿUbaydah, from ʿAbdullāh. Others narrate it as a mursal report from al-Thawrī and do not mention Ibn Masʿūd in it, and the mursal (mursal) is more correct than the connected (muttaṣil) one.
