حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو الرَّبِيعِ الزَّهْرَانِيُّ، حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الْعَزِيزِ بْنُ الْمُخْتَارِ الْأَنْصَارِيُّ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ فَيْرُوزَ، حَدَّثَنِي حُضَيْنُ بْنُ الْمُنْذِرِ الرَّقَاشِيُّ، قَالَ:

شَهِدْتُ عُثْمَانَ بْنَ عَفَّانَ وَأُتِيَ بِالْوَلِيدِ بْنِ عُقْبَةَ قَدْ صَلَّى بِأَهْلِ الْكُوفَةِ الصُّبْحَ أَرْبَعًا، ثُمَّ قَالَ: أَزِيدُكُمْ ؟ قَالَ: شَهِدَ عَلَيْهِ حُمْرَانُ وَرَجُلٌ آخَرُ، شَهِدَ أَحَدُهُمَا أَنَّهُ رَآهُ يَشْرَبُهَا - يَعْنِي الْخَمْرَ - وَشَهِدَ الْآخَرُ أَنَّهُ رَآهُ يَتَقَيَّؤُهَا، فَقَالَ عُثْمَانُ: إِنَّهُ لَمْ يَتَقَيَّأْهَا حَتَّى شَرِبَهَا، فَقَالَ لِعَلِيِّ بْنِ أَبِي طَالِبٍ: أَقِمْ عَلَيْهِ الْحَدَّ، فَقَالَ عَلِيٌّ لِابْنِهِ الْحَسَنِ: أَقِمْ عَلَيْهِ الْحَدَّ، فَقَالَ الْحَسَنُ: وَلِّ حَارَّهَا مَنْ تَوَلَّى قَارَّهَا، فَقَالَ لِعَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ جَعْفَرٍ ابْنِ أَخِيهِ: أَقِمْ عَلَيْهِ الْحَدَّ، فَأَخَذَ سَوْطًا فَجَلَدَهُ، وَعَلِيٌّ يَعُدُّ، فَلَمَّا بَلَغَ أَرْبَعِينَ، قَالَ: أَمْسِكْ، جَلَدَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ أَرْبَعِينَ، وَأَبُو بَكْرٍ أَرْبَعِينَ، وَعُمَرُ ثَمَانِينَ، وَكُلٌّ سُنَّةٌ، وَهَذَا أَحَبُّ إِلَيَّ

✧ I witnessed 'Uthman b. 'Affan when al-Walid b. 'Uqbah was brought to him, who had led the people of Kufah in the morning prayer with four rak'ahs, then said: "Shall I give you more?" He said: Humran and another man testified against him. One of them testified that he saw him drinking it - meaning wine - and the other testified that he saw him vomiting it. 'Uthman said: "He would not have vomited it unless he drank it." So he said to 'Ali b. Abi Talib: "Carry out the prescribed punishment on him." 'Ali said to his son al-Hasan: "Carry out the prescribed punishment on him." Al-Hasan said: "Appoint someone to handle its heat who has assumed its cold." So he said to 'Abdullah b. Ja'far, his nephew: "Carry out the prescribed punishment on him." He took a whip and flogged him, while 'Ali counted. When it reached forty, he said: "Stop. The Prophet ﷺ flogged forty, Abu Bakr forty, and 'Umar eighty. Each is a Sunnah, and this is dearer to me."
