✧ I went out on a cold morning, hungry, and the cold had exhausted me. I took a woolen garment that we had, then I put it around my neck and tied it on my chest to keep warm with it. By Allah, there was nothing in my house for me to eat, and if there had been anything in the house of the Prophet ﷺ it would have reached me. So I went out to one of the areas of Madinah and went to a Jew in his garden. I looked at him from a gap in his wall. He said: "What is the matter with you, O Bedouin? Would you like a bucket for a date?" I said: "Yes, open the garden for me." So he opened it for me, and I entered. I began drawing the bucket and he would give me a date, until I filled my palm. I said: "That is enough from you now." Then I ate them, then drank some water. Then I came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and sat with him in the mosque, while he was with a group of his companions. Mus'ab b. 'Umayr appeared before us in a cloak of his patched with fur. He had been the most pampered youth in Makkah and the most comfortable in his living. When the Prophet ﷺ saw him, he remembered the luxury he had been in, and saw the condition he was in now, so his eyes shed tears and he wept. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Are you better today, or when a tray of bread and meat is brought to one of you in the morning, and another in the evening, and he goes out in one fine garment and returns in another, and you cover your houses as the Ka'bah is covered?" We said: "Rather we are better then, free for worship." He said: "Rather you are better today."
