✧ O Ibn al-Khattab, I am the Messenger of God, and God will never cause me to be lost. So Umar went away, not enduring his anger, until he came to Abu Bakr and said: O Abu Bakr, are we not upon truth while they are upon falsehood? He said: Yes. He said: Are not our dead in Paradise and their dead in the Fire? He said: Yes. He said: Then why should we give the diniyyah (concession) in our religion and return without God judging between us and them? He said: O Ibn al-Khattab, he is the Messenger of God, and God will never cause him to be lost. Then the Quran was revealed to Muhammad with victory, so he sent for Umar and recited it to him. Umar said: O Messenger of God, is it a victory? He said: Yes. So his soul was at ease and he returned, and the people returned. Then they went out to Harura'—that band of Kharijites, more than ten thousand—and Ali sent to them adjuring them by God, but they refused. Sa'sa'ah b. Suhan came to them and adjured them, saying: On what basis will you fight your own caliph? They said: Out of fear of fitnah. He said: Do not hasten into the misguidance of this year out of fear of the fitnah of next year. So they returned and said: We will proceed as we came. If Ali accepts the arbitration, we will fight as we fought on the day of Siffin, and if he rejects it, we will fight with him. They marched until they reached Nahrawan. A faction split off from them and began terrorizing people at night. Their companions said: Woe to you! This is not why we parted with Ali. Their affair reached Ali, so he stood and addressed the people, saying: What do you think? Should we march against the people of Syria or return to those who remained behind among your families? They said: Rather, return to them. He mentioned their affair and told them what the Messenger of God ﷺ said about them: A faction will emerge at a time of dissension among the people, and the nearest of the two parties to the truth will kill them. Their sign is a man among them whose hand is like a woman's breast. They marched until they met at Nahrawan and fought a severe battle. Ali's cavalry could not withstand them, so Ali stood and said: O people, if you fight for my sake, by God I have nothing with which to reward you, and if you fight for God's sake, then let not this be your conduct. The people made one united charge, and the enemy was cleared away, face down. Ali said: Seek the man among them. The people searched for the man but did not find him, until some of them said: Ibn Abi Talib deceived us regarding our brothers until we killed them. He said: Ali's eyes filled with tears, and he called for his mount, rode it, and went until he came to a hollow in which the dead were piled one upon another. He began pulling them by their feet until he found the man beneath them. They informed him, and Ali said: God is great, and he rejoiced, and the people rejoiced and returned. Ali said: I will not conduct a military expedition this year, and he returned to Kufa. He was killed, may God have mercy on him, and Hasan was made caliph and followed the way of his father, then he sent the pledge of allegiance to Muawiyah.
