✧ Make the journey brisk, for between you and the polytheists is a water source. If the polytheists get there first, it will be hard on the people and you will be overcome by severe thirst, you and your riding beasts and mounts. The Messenger of God ﷺ lagged behind with eight men, he being the ninth of them, and said to his companions: Would you like us to halt for a little rest, then catch up with the people? They said: Yes, O Messenger of God. So they halted, and nothing awakened them except the heat of the sun. The Messenger of God ﷺ woke up and his companions woke up, and he said to them: Get up and relieve yourselves. They did so, then returned to the Messenger of God ﷺ. The Messenger of God ﷺ said to them: Does any of you have water? A man among them said: O Messenger of God, there is a small vessel with some water in it. He said: Bring it. He brought it, and the Messenger of God ﷺ took it, wiped it with his hands, and prayed for blessing. Then he said to his companions: Come and perform ablution. They came, and the Messenger of God ﷺ poured for them until they had performed ablution. One of them called the adhan and the iqamah, and the Messenger of God ﷺ led them in prayer. He said to the owner of the vessel: Take good care of your vessel, for it will have a story. Then the Messenger of God ﷺ and his companions mounted before the people, and he said to his companions: What do you think the people have done? They said: God and His Messenger know best. He said to them: Abu Bakr and Umar are among them, and they will guide the people. The people arrived when the polytheists had already reached that water, and it was hard on the people; they and their mounts and beasts suffered severe thirst. The Messenger of God ﷺ said: Where is the owner of the vessel? He said: Here he is, O Messenger of God. He said: Bring your vessel. He brought it, and in it was some water. He said to all of them: Come and drink. The Messenger of God ﷺ poured for them until they all drank, and they gave their beasts and mounts to drink, and filled every water skin and container. Then the Messenger of God ﷺ and his companions advanced against the polytheists, and God sent a wind that struck the faces of the polytheists, and God, Blessed and Exalted, sent down His help and gave them the upper hand, so they killed a great number of them, took many captives, and seized much booty, and the Messenger of God ﷺ and the people returned safe and sound.
