✧ On Friday, Zayd b. Suhan was with him while he was delivering the sermon on a pulpit made of brick, with the clients around him. A man spoke some words—I do not know what they were—and he became angry until his face turned red. Then he fell silent. While we were like that, al-Ash'ath b. Qays came stepping over people and said: 'These red ones have prevailed over you on account of your face.' Zayd b. Suhan struck my shoulders and said: 'Indeed we belong to Allah. By Allah, the Arabs will surely reveal what they used to conceal.' Then he said: 'Who will excuse me from these idle, arrogant ones? One of them turns over on his bed while people go early to the remembrance of Allah. So what do you command me? Shall I drive them away and thus be among the wrongdoers?' Then he said: 'By the One who split the grain and created the soul, I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: They will surely strike you away from the religion a second time just as you struck them for it the first time.'
