✧ I was in the mosque on Friday while 'Ali b. Abi Talib was giving a sermon from a brick minbar. Behind me was Sa'sa'a b. Suhan. A man spoke to him about something that was hidden from us, and we recognized anger in his face, so he fell silent. Then al-Ash'ath b. Qays came, stepping over people's necks until he was close. He said: 'O Commander of the Believers, these red-skinned ones have overcome us in your presence.' Sa'sa'a struck me between my shoulders with his hand and said: 'To God we belong and to Him we return. Today he will reveal a matter concerning the Arabs that he was concealing.' He said: 'He became very angry and said: "Who will excuse me from these fools? One of them wallows in his cushions and abandons people who remember God, Mighty and Majestic. He orders me to expel them, and that I should be among the wrongdoers. By Him who split the grain and created the soul, I heard Muhammad ﷺ say: 'By God, they will strike you back regarding the religion as you struck them regarding it in the beginning.'"

machine translationAl-Dāraquṭnī was asked about it and said: Abū Muʿāwiyah al-Ḍarīr narrates it from al-Aʿmash, from al-Minhāl b. ʿAmr, from ʿAbbād b. ʿAbdillāh al-Asadī, from ʿAlī as a statement of his own (mawqūf). Abū ʿAwānah and Yaḥyā b. ʿĪsā al-Ramlī raised it to the Prophet (marfūʿ) from al-Aʿmash. Sharīk narrated it from al-Aʿmash and inclined toward raising it, but did not state it explicitly. Its raised (marfūʿ) version is sound (ṣaḥīḥ).
