✧ I, Fatimah, al-Abbas, and Zayd b. Harithah gathered together. Al-Abbas said: "O Messenger of God, I have grown old, my bones have become thin, and my expenses have increased. If you see fit, O Messenger of God, to order for me such-and-such measures of food, then do so." The Messenger of God ﷺ said: "I have done so." Fatimah said: "O Messenger of God, if you see fit to order for me what you ordered, then do so." The Prophet ﷺ said: "I have done that." Zayd b. Harithah said: "O Messenger of God, you had given me some land from which I made my living, then you took it back from me. If you see fit to return it to me, then do so." The Messenger of God ﷺ said: "I have done that." I said: "O Messenger of God, if you see fit to entrust to me this right that God has assigned to us in His Book regarding this fifth, so that I may distribute it during your lifetime and no one will dispute it with me after you, then do so." The Messenger of God ﷺ said: "I have done that." So the Messenger of God ﷺ entrusted it to me, and I distributed it during his lifetime. Then Abu Bakr entrusted it to me, and I distributed it during his lifetime. Then Umar entrusted it to me, and I distributed it during his lifetime, until the last year of Umar's caliphate, when a large amount of wealth came to him and he set aside a fifth. He then sent for me and said: "O Ali, this is your due, so take it." I said: "O Commander of the Faithful, we have no need of it this year, and the Muslims have need of it, so return it to them." Umar returned it that year. Then no one called me to it after Umar, until I stood in this position of mine. Al-Abbas met me and said: "O Ali, today you have taken away from us something that will never be returned to us."
