✧ The first li'an in Islam was that Sharik b. Sahma' was accused by Hilal b. Umayyah regarding his wife. The matter was brought to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. The Prophet ﷺ said: "O Hilal, four witnesses, or else a hadd punishment on your back." He replied: "O Messenger of Allah, Allah knows that I am truthful, and Allah will surely reveal what will clear my back from flogging." Then Allah revealed the verse of li'an: "And those who accuse their wives, and have no witnesses except themselves..." until the end of the verse. The Prophet ﷺ summoned him and said: "Testify by Allah that you are among the truthful in what you accused her of regarding adultery." He testified to that four times. Then he said to him the fifth time: "And the curse of Allah be upon you if you are among the liars in what you accused her of regarding adultery." He did so. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ summoned her and said: "Stand and testify by Allah that he is among the liars in what he accused you of regarding adultery." She testified to that four times. Then he said to her the fifth time: "And the wrath of Allah be upon you if he is among the truthful in what he accused you of regarding adultery." She said... Makhallad said: When it came to the fourth or fifth time, she paused briefly until they thought she would confess, then she said: "I will not disgrace my people for the rest of the day." She continued with her statement. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ separated them and said: "Observe her. If she gives birth to a curly-haired child with lean calves, he belongs to Sharik b. Sahma'. If she gives birth to a fair, straight-haired child with bright eyes, he belongs to Hilal b. Umayyah." She gave birth to a dark, curly-haired child with lean calves. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Were it not for what Allah revealed about them, I would have had a matter with her."
