✧ We were with the Messenger of God ﷺ, and with him was ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb, while the Messenger of God was on a bed woven with palm-fiber straps, there being nothing between the side of the Messenger of God ﷺ and the strap. He said: And he had the thinnest skin of all people, so he turned slightly and the strap had left a mark on the skin of his belly, or on his side. Then ʿUmar wept. The Messenger of God ﷺ said, “What makes you weep?” He said, “By God, O Messenger of God, I do not weep because I do not know that you are nobler before God than Caesar and Khosrow, for they revel in whatever worldly things they revel in, while you are the Messenger of God in the place I see!” He said, “O ʿUmar, are you not content that for us is the Hereafter and for them is this world?” He said, “Yes.” He said, “Then it is indeed so.”
