- Ibn ʿAbbās
✧ The Messenger of God ﷺ performed ʿumrah, and between him and the people of Makkah there was a pact that he would not take anyone of its people out. When the Messenger of God ﷺ finished his ʿumrah, he left Makkah and the Messenger of God ﷺ passed by the daughter of Ḥamzah b. ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib. She said: O Messenger of God, to whom are you leaving me? He did not turn to her due to the pact between him and the people of Makkah. Zayd b. Ḥārithah passed by her and she said: To whom are you leaving me? He did not turn to her. Jaʿfar passed by her, and she implored him, but he did not turn to her. Then ʿAlī b. Abī Ṭālib passed by her, and she said: O Abū Ḥasan, to whom are you leaving me? ʿAlī took her and placed her behind Fāṭimah. When they alighted, Zayd came to ʿAlī and said: I have more right to her than you; I am the mawlā of the Prophet of God ﷺ. ʿAlī said: I have more right to her than you. Jaʿfar said: I have more right to her; her maternal aunt is with me, Asmāʾ bt. ʿUmays al-Khathʿamiyyah. When their voices rose, the Messenger of God ﷺ sent for them. When they came to him, he said: As for you, O Jaʿfar, you resemble my physical form and my character. As for you, O ʿAlī, I am from you and you are my waṣī. As for Zayd, he is my mawlā and your mawlā. So hand the girl over to her maternal aunt, for she has more right to her.
