✧ Ḥamzah’s daughter followed them calling, “O uncle, O uncle.” ʿAlī took her by the hand and said to Fāṭimah, “Here is your cousin’s daughter; take care of her.” ʿAlī, Zayd, and Jaʿfar disputed over her. ʿAlī said, “I took her and she is my cousin.” Jaʿfar said, “She is my cousin and her maternal aunt is my wife.” Zayd said, “She is my brother’s daughter.” The Messenger of God ﷺ ruled that she go to her maternal aunt, saying, “The maternal aunt is like the mother.” Then he said to ʿAlī, “You are from me and I am from you.” He said to Jaʿfar, “You resemble me in appearance and character.” He said to Zayd, “You are our brother and our client.” ʿAlī said to him, “O Messenger of God, will you not marry Ḥamzah’s daughter?” He replied, “She is the daughter of my foster brother.”
