✧ Abu Bakr al-Siddiq entered seeking permission to see the Messenger of God ﷺ, and he found people sitting at his door, none of them having been given permission. He said: Permission was given to Abu Bakr, and he entered. Then Umar came and sought permission, and permission was given to him. He found the Prophet ﷺ sitting with his wives around him, silent and grieved. He said: I will say something to make the Prophet ﷺ laugh. He said, "O Messenger of God, if you had seen the daughter of Kharija: she asked me for maintenance, so I stood up to her and struck her neck." The Messenger of God ﷺ laughed and said, "They are around me as you see, asking me for maintenance." Abu Bakr stood up to Aisha, striking her neck, and Umar stood up to Hafsa, striking her neck. Each of them said, "Do you ask the Messenger of God ﷺ for what he does not have?" They said, "By God, we will never ask the Messenger of God ﷺ for anything he does not have." Then he withdrew from them for a month or twenty-nine days. Then this verse was revealed to him: "O Prophet, say to your wives..." until he reached, "for the doers of good among you a great reward." He said: He began with Aisha and said, "O Aisha, I want to present to you a matter, and I would not like you to hasten in it with anything until you consult your parents." She said, "What is it, O Messenger of God?" He recited the verse to her. She said, "Should I consult my parents concerning you, O Messenger of God? Rather I choose God and His Messenger and the Hereafter, and I ask you not to inform any woman of your wives of what I said." He said, "No woman among them asks me except that I inform her. God did not send me as one who makes things difficult, but He sent me as a teacher, one who makes things easy."
