✧ The wives of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ asked him for maintenance, and he had nothing of it, until they confined him. Abu Bakr came to him and sought permission to enter, but he was not granted permission. Then ‘Umar came to him and sought permission to enter, but he was not granted permission. Then they both sought permission after that and were granted permission, and found him among them. ‘Umar said to him, “O Messenger of Allah, the daughter of Zayd asked me for maintenance, so I struck her or something like that,” intending by that to make him laugh. He laughed until his molars showed, and said, “By the One in whose hand is my soul, nothing kept me except that.” Then they both stood up to their two daughters, took them by the hands, and said, “Do you ask the Messenger of Allah ﷺ for what he does not have?!” The Messenger of Allah ﷺ forbade them from that, and they said, “We will not return to it.” It was then that the choice was revealed.
