حَدَّثَنَا زَكَرِيَّا بْنُ يَحْيَى، حَدَّثَنَا هُشَيْمٌ، عَنْ أَبِي الزُّبَيْرِ، عَنْ جَابِرٍ قَالَ:

كُنَّا مَعَ أَبِي عُبَيْدَةَ بْنِ الْجَرَّاحِ فِي سَرِيَّةٍ أَوْ جَيْشٍ، فَنَفِدَ زَادُنَا، فَبَصُرْنَا بِحُوتٍ قَذَفَهُ الْبَحْرُ فَأَرَدْنَا أَنْ نَأْكُلَ مِنْهُ، فَنَهَانَا أَبُو عُبَيْدَةَ، ثُمَّ قَالَ: نَحْنُ رُسُلُ رَسُولِ اللهِ، وَفِي سَبِيلِ اللهِ كُلُوا، فَأَكَلْنَا مِنْهُ، فَلَمَّا رَجَعْنَا ذَكَرْنَا ذَلِكَ لِرَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَقَالَ: إِنْ كَانَ مَعَكُمْ مِنْهُ شَيْءٌ فَابْعَثُوا بِهِ إِلَيْنَا

Translation

✧ We were with Abu 'Ubaydah b. al-Jarrah on a military expedition or an army, and our provisions ran out. We spotted a fish cast up by the sea and wanted to eat from it, but Abu 'Ubaydah forbade us. Then he said: “We are messengers of the Messenger of Allah and in the path of Allah, so eat.” We ate from it. When we returned, we mentioned that to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and he said: “If you have any of it with you, send it to us.”
