✧ The Fish

أَخْبَرَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّزَّاقِ قَالَ: أَخْبَرَنَا مَعْمَرٌ، عَنْ هِشَامِ بْنِ عُرْوَةَ، عَنْ وَهْبِ بْنِ كَيْسَانَ قَالَ: سَمِعْتُ جَابِرَ بْنَ عَبْدِ اللهِ يَقُولُ:
بَعَثَنَا النَّبِيُّ ﷺ فِي سَرِيَّةٍ، وَزَوَّدَنَا جِرَابَ تَمْرٍ، فَلَمَّا خَرَجْنَا أَنْفَقْنَا مَا كَانَ مَعَنَا، وَأَرْمَلْنَا مِنَ الزَّادِ، فَلَمْ يَبْقَ مَعَنَا إِلَّا الْجِرَابُ، قَالَ: فَكَانَ كُلُّ وَاحِدٍ مِنَّا يُعْطَى تَمْرَةً قَالَ: فَقُلْتُ: أَوَهَلْ كَانَتْ تَنْفَعُكُمْ ؟ فَقَالَ جَابِرٌ: لَا جَرْمَ إِنَّا وَجَدْنَا فَقْدَهَا، قَالَ: فَسِرْنَا حَتَّى أَتَيْنَا سَاحِلَ الْبَحْرِ قَالَ: وَأَبُو عُبَيْدَةَ بْنُ الْجَرَّاحِ أَمِيرُنَا، فَنَجِدُ عَلَى السَّاحِلِ حُوتًا قَدْ أَخْرَجَهُ اللهُ لَنَا، فَقَالَ: إِنَّمَا هُوَ مَيْتَةٌ، فَقَالَ أَبُو عُبَيْدَةَ: إِنَّمَا هُوَ رِزْقٌ رَزَقَكُمُوهُ اللهُ، قَالَ: فَأَقَمْنَا ثَمَانِيَةَ عَشَرَ يَوْمًا نَأْكُلُ مِنْ لَحْمِهِ، وَنَدَّهِنُ مِنْ وَدَكِهِ، وَنَحْنُ ثَلَاثُمِائَةِ رَجُلٍ قَالَ: وَأَمَرَ أَبُو قَتَادَةَ بِضِلْعٍ مِنْ أَضْلَاعِ ذَلِكَ الْحُوتِ، فَوُضِعَ فَمَرَّ تَحْتَهُ رَاكِبٌ
Translation
✧ The Prophet ﷺ sent us on a military expedition and provisioned us with a bag of dates. When we set out, we spent what we had with us and exhausted the provisions, until nothing remained with us except the bag. He said: Each one of us was given a single date. I said: "Did it benefit you?" Jabir said: "Indeed, we felt its loss." He said: We traveled until we came to the seashore. He said: Abu Ubaydah b. al-Jarrah was our commander, and we found on the shore a huge fish that Allah had cast out for us. He said: "It is carrion." Abu Ubaydah said: "It is provision Allah has provided for you." He said: We stayed for eighteen days eating from its meat and anointing ourselves with its fat, and we were three hundred men. He said: Abu Qatadah ordered one of the ribs of that fish to be set up, and a rider passed beneath it.
