✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent a group and appointed Abu Ubaydah b. al-Jarrah over them. When he was about to set out, he wept out of longing for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. So he sent a man in his place named Abdullah b. Jahsh, and wrote him a letter, and commanded him not to compel anyone of his companions to proceed with him. When he read the letter, he said: 'We belong to Allah and to Him we return,' and said: 'Hearing and obedience, meaning to Allah and His Messenger.' He informed them of the news and read the letter to them. Two men went back, and the rest went on. They met Ibn al-Hadrami and killed him, and they did not know whether that day was from Rajab or Jumada. The polytheists said to the Muslims: 'You did such and such in the sacred month.' They came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and told him the story. Allah revealed: 'They ask you about fighting in the sacred month. Say: Fighting therein is great' up to His saying: 'and fitnah is greater than killing.' He said: 'Polytheism.' One of those who were in the expedition said: 'By Allah, only one killed him. If it is good, you have done it; if it is a sin, you have committed it.' Some Muslims said: 'If they did not incur sin in their month, they have no reward in it.' Allah revealed: 'Indeed, those who have believed and those who emigrated and fought in the cause of Allah - those expect the mercy of Allah, and Allah is Forgiving and Merciful.'
