The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent a small group of men and appointed ʿUbaydah b. al-Ḥārith over them. He said: When he set out to depart, he wept out of longing for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. So the Prophet ﷺ sent in his place a man called ʿAbdullāh b. Jaḥsh, and wrote him a letter, and commanded him not to read it until he reached such and such a place, and said: "Do not force any of your companions to travel with you." When he reached that place, he read the letter and said, "Truly to Allah we belong and to Him we shall return." He said: "We hear and obey Allah and His Messenger." He said: So one man of his companions turned back, and the rest of them went on with him. They met Ibn al-Ḥaḍramī and killed him, and they did not know whether that was in Rajab or in Jumādā al-Ākhirah. The polytheists said: "They killed him in the sacred month." So it was revealed: ﴿يَسْأَلُونَكَ عَنِ الشَّهْرِ الْحَرَامِ قِتَالٍ فِيهِ قُلْ قِتَالٌ فِيهِ كَبِيرٌ﴾ up to His saying: ﴿وَالْفِتْنَةُ أَكْبَرُ مِنَ الْقَتْلِ﴾. He said: Some of the Muslims said, "Even if they gained good, they have no reward."
