Correcting The Imam In The Prayer

Show the chain

The Prophet ﷺ prayed and recited the Qur’an in it. He was then confused in it (in his recitation). When he finished (his prayer), he said to Ubayy (b. Ka’b): Did you pray along with us? He said: Yes. He said: What prevented you (from correcting me)?

machine translationThis is an error (wahm) that entered Hishām b. Ismāʿīl, a hadith within a hadith. I looked into some of the categories of Muḥammad b. Shuʿayb's material and found that this hadith was narrated by Muḥammad b. Shuʿayb from Muḥammad b. Yazīd al-Baṣrī, from Hishām b. ʿUrwah, from his father: that the Prophet ﷺ prayed and omitted a verse, thus, as a mursal report. And I saw beside it the hadith of ʿAbdullāh b. al-ʿAlāʾ, from Sālim, from his father, from the Prophet ﷺ, that he was asked about the night prayer and said: "Two by two, and if you fear the dawn..." So I knew that the text (matn) of the hadith of ʿAbdullāh b. al-ʿAlāʾ had dropped out for Hishām b. Ismāʿīl while its chain (isnād) remained, and the chain of the hadith of Muḥammad b. Yazīd al-Baṣrī had dropped out. So the text of the hadith of Muḥammad b. Yazīd al-Baṣrī became attached to the chain of the hadith of ʿAbdullāh b. al-ʿAlāʾ b. Zabr.
