What scholars said about it

In their own words, as Hadith Unlocked records them. They are shown, not summarised into a grade.

  • Aḥmad b. Ḥanbal

machine translationHe declared it sound (ṣaḥḥaḥahu).

  • Ibn ʿAbd al-Barr

machine translationIts chain is inconsistent (muḍṭarib al-isnād), and a group of the hadith scholars do not regard it as established.

  • Badr al-Dīn al-ʿAynī

machine translationThere is a disagreement about its chain of transmission, the explanation of which is that Hilāl b. Yisāf narrates it from ʿAmr b. Rāshid from Wābiṣah, while some of them said: Hilāl from Wābiṣah. Regarding this, al-Shāfiʿī said: "If the hadith were established, I would hold by it."

  • Ibn ʿAbd al-Barr

machine translationIt contains inconsistency (iḍṭirāb), and a group do not regard it as established.

  • Ibn Ḥazm

machine translationHe declared it sound (ṣaḥḥaḥahu).

  • Abū Ḥatim al-Rāzī

machine translationI asked my father about a hadith narrated by Ḥuṣayn from Hilāl b. Yisāf from Ziyād b. Abī al-Jaʿd from Wābiṣah: that a man prayed alone behind the row, and the Prophet ﷺ ordered him to repeat the prayer. And ʿAmr b. Murrah narrated it from Hilāl b. Yisāf from ʿAmr b. Rāshid from Wābiṣah from the Prophet ﷺ. I said to my father: Which of the two is more likely? He said: ʿAmr b. Murrah is the better memorizer.

  • Ibn ʿAbd al-Barr

machine translationIt is not established according to a group, and it contains inconsistency (iḍṭirāb).

  • al-Tirmidhi

machine translationFor ʿAmr b. Rāshid is a man of whom nothing is known; he narrated only this hadith, and he is not known for uprightness (ʿadālah), so his hadith is not used as evidence. As for the hadith of Ḥuṣayn, Ḥuṣayn was not a reliable memorizer (ḥāfiẓ), so his hadith is not used as evidence in a legal ruling. As for the hadith of Yazīd b. Ziyād, we know of no scholar who does not consider his reports weak, so his hadith is not used as evidence. It has also been narrated from Shamir b. ʿAṭiyyah, from Hilāl b. Yasāf, from Wābiṣah, but Hilāl did not hear from Wābiṣah, so we refrained from mentioning it because it is mursal.

  • Aḥmad b. Ḥanbal

machine translationThe best of them in terms of chain of transmission.

  • Abū ʿAbdullāh al-Ḥākim

machine translationThe two Shaykhs only did not include it because of the corruption of the path leading to it.

  • Bazzār
