✧ The Game of the Trained Animal, and Whether Hunting Dogs Are Sent after Carrion

عَبْدُ الرَّزَّاقِ، أَخْبَرَنَا مَعْمَرٌ، عَنْ أَيُّوبَ، عَنْ أَبِي قِلَابَةَ، عَنْ أَبِي ثَعْلَبَةَ الْخُشَنِيِّ قَالَ:
أَتَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ فَقُلْتُ: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ اكْتُبْ لِي أَرْضَ كَذَا، وَكَذَا لَمْ يَكُنْ ظَهَرَ عَلَيْهَا حِينَئِذٍ، فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ: " أَلَا تَسْمَعُونَ إِلَى مَا يَقُولُ هَذَا ؟ " قَالَ أَبُو ثَعْلَبَةَ: وَالَّذِي نَفْسِي بِيَدِهِ لَتَظْهَرَنَّ عَلَيْهَا يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ ! قَالَ: " فَكَتَبَ لَهُ بِهَا "، قَالَ: قُلْتُ: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ إِنَّ أَرْضَنَا أَرْضُ صَيْدٍ، فَأُرْسِلُ كَلْبِي الْمُكَلَّبَ، وَكَلْبِي الَّذِي لَيْسَ بِمُكَلَّبٍ، فَقَالَ: إِذَا أَرْسَلْتَ كَلْبَكَ الْمُكَلَّبَ، وَسَمَّيْتَ فَكُلْ مِمَّا أَمْسَكَ عَلَيْكَ كَلْبُكَ، وَإِنْ قَتَلَ، وَإِذَا أَرْسَلْتَ كَلْبَكَ الَّذِي لَيْسَ بِمُكَلَّبٍ، فَأَدْرَكْتَ ذَكَاتَهُ فَكُلْ، وَكُلْ مِمَّا رَدَّ عَلَيْكَ سَهْمُكَ، وَإِنْ قَتَلَ "، قَالَ: قُلْتُ: " وَسَمِّ اللهَ ". قَالَ: قُلْتُ: يَا نَبِيَّ اللهِ ! إِنَّ أَرْضَنَا أَرْضُ أَهْلِ كِتَابٍ، وَإِنَّهُمْ يَأْكُلُونَ لَحْمَ الْخِنْزِيرِ، وَيَشْرَبُونَ الْخَمْرَ، فَكَيْفَ نَصْنَعُ بِآنِيَتِهِمْ، وَقُدُورِهِمْ قَالَ: " إِنْ لَمْ تَجِدُوا غَيْرَهَا فَارْحَضُوهَا بِالْمَاءِ، وَاطْبُخُوا فِيهَا، وَاشْرَبُوا ". قَالَ: قُلْتُ: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ مَا يَحِلُّ لَنَا مِمَّا يَحْرُمُ عَلَيْنَا ؟ قَالَ: " لَا تَأْكُلُوا لُحُومَ الْحُمُرِ الْإِنْسِيَّةِ، وَلَا كُلَّ ذِي نَابٍ مِنَ السِّبَاعِ
Translation
✧ I came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said: O Messenger of Allah, write for me the land of such-and-such, which had not yet been conquered at that time. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Will you not listen to what this one says?" Abu Thalabah said: By the One in whose hand is my soul, it will surely be conquered, O Messenger of Allah! He said: "So he wrote it for him." He said: I said: O Messenger of Allah, our land is a land of game, so I send my trained dog and my dog that is not trained. He said: "When you send your trained dog and pronounce the name of Allah, then eat of what your dog holds back for you, even if it kills. And when you send your dog that is not trained, and you catch up with it while it is still alive and slaughter it, then eat. And eat of what your arrow brings back to you, even if it kills." He said: I said: "And pronounce the name of Allah." He said: I said: O Prophet of Allah, our land is the land of the People of the Book, and they eat pork and drink wine, so how should we deal with their vessels and cooking pots? He said: "If you find no others, then wash them with water and cook in them and drink." He said: I said: O Messenger of Allah, what is lawful for us from what is forbidden to us? He said: "Do not eat the flesh of domestic donkeys, nor any beast of prey with fangs."
