✧ The man who prays a prayer without completing it

أَخْبَرَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّزَّاقِ قَالَ: أَخْبَرَنَا دَاوُدُ بْنُ قَيْسٍ قَالَ: حَدَّثَنِي عَلِيُّ بْنُ يَحْيَى بْنِ خَلَّادِ بْنِ رَافِعِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ الزُّرَقِيُّ قَالَ: حَدَّثَنِي أَبِي، عَنْ عَمِّهِ - وَكَانَ بَدْرِيًّا - قَالَ:
بَيْنَا نَحْنُ جُلُوسٌ مَعَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فِي الْمَسْجِدِ، إِذْ دَخَلَ رَجُلٌ فَصَلَّى رَكْعَتَيْنِ، وَالنَّبِيُّ ﷺ يَرْمُقُهُ، ثُمَّ جَاءَ فَسَلَّمَ عَلَيْهِ، فَرَدَّ عَلَيْهِ السَّلَامَ ثُمَّ قَالَ: ارْجِعْ فَصَلِّ فَإِنَّكَ لَمْ تُصَلِّ قَالَ: فَرَجَعَ فَصَلَّى، ثُمَّ جَاءَ فَسَلَّمَ عَلَيْهِ، فَرَدَّ عَلَيْهِ السَّلَامَ، ثُمَّ قَالَ: " ارْجِعْ فَصَلِّ فَإِنَّكَ لَمْ تُصَلِّ "، فَرَجَعَ ثُمَّ جَاءَ فَسَلَّمَ عَلَيْهِ، فَرَدَّ عَلَيْهِ السَّلَامَ، ثُمَّ قَالَ: " ارْجِعْ فَصَلِّ فَإِنَّكَ لَمْ تُصَلِّ "، فَأَعَادَ عَلَيْهِ الْقَوْلَ الثَّالِثَةَ أَوِ الرَّابِعَةَ، وَالنَّبِيُّ ﷺ يَقُولُ مِثْلَ قَوْلِهِ الْأَوَّلِ، فَقَالَ: أَيْ رَسُولَ اللهِ، بِأَبِي أَنْتَ وَأُمِّي، وَالَّذِي أَنْزَلَ عَلَيْكَ الْكِتَابَ لَقَدِ اجْتَهَدْتُ وَحَرَصْتُ فَأَرِنِي وَعَلِّمْنِي، فَقَالَ: " إِذَا أَرَدْتَ أَنْ تُصَلِّيَ فَأَحْسِنْ وُضُوءَكَ، ثُمَّ اسْتَقْبِلِ الْقِبْلَةَ فَكَبِّرْ، ثُمَّ اقْرَأْ، ثُمَّ ارْكَعْ حَتَّى تَطْمَئِنَّ رَاكِعًا، ثُمَّ ارْفَعْ حَتَّى تَعْتَدِلَ قَائِمًا، ثُمَّ اسْجُدْ حَتَّى تَطْمَئِنَّ سَاجِدًا، ثُمَّ ارْفَعْ حَتَّى تَطْمَئِنَّ جَالِسًا، ثُمَّ اسْجُدْ حَتَّى تَطْمَئِنَّ سَاجِدًا، ثُمَّ ارْفَعْ، فَإِذَا أَتْمَمْتَ عَلَى هَذَا، فَقَدْ أَتْمَمْتَ وَمَا نَقَصْتَ مِنْ هَذَا نَقَصْتَهُ مِنْ نَفْسِكَ
Translation
✧ While we were sitting with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ in the mosque, a man entered and prayed two rak'ahs, and the Prophet ﷺ was watching him. Then he came and greeted him, and he returned the greeting. Then he said: Go back and pray, for you have not prayed. He returned and prayed, then came and greeted him, and he returned the greeting. Then he said: “Go back and pray, for you have not prayed.” He returned, then came and greeted him, and he returned the greeting. Then he said: “Go back and pray, for you have not prayed.” He repeated the statement to him a third or fourth time, and the Prophet ﷺ kept saying the same as his first statement. The man said: O Messenger of Allah, may my father and mother be ransomed for you, by the One who sent down the Book upon you, I have striven and been eager, so show me and teach me. He said: “When you intend to pray, perfect your ablution, then face the qiblah and say the takbir, then recite, then bow until you are at rest in bowing, then rise until you are standing upright, then prostrate until you are at rest in prostration, then rise until you are at rest sitting, then prostrate until you are at rest in prostration, then rise. If you complete it upon this, you have completed it; and whatever you diminish from this, you diminish from yourself.”
