Translation

✧ That 'Ali in al-Kufah said to his servant: 'O Qanbar, bring me water for ablution.' So he brought it to him—al-Mughirah said, on the authority of 'Abd al-Karim: in a large wooden bowl—and he began by washing his hands before putting them into the ablution water three times, then rinsed his mouth three times and sniffed water and blew it out three times, then washed his face three times, then washed his right hand up to the elbow three times, and the left likewise. Then he scooped one handful of water with one of his hands onto his head and wiped with it—he said: in summer—as if he scooped it because of the heat. He said: then he washed his right foot up to the ankles three times, then the left likewise. Then he stood upright and drank from the leftover water of his ablution, and said: 'Whoever would like to look at the ablution of the Messenger of God ﷺ, this is how he should perform ablution.' He said: and they hold that the Prophet ﷺ drank the leftover water of his ablution standing, just as 'Ali did. Then he prayed the prescribed prayer. He said: then he did not leave his seat until he called Qanbar for water for the prayer, then scooped one handful, rinsed his mouth from it and sniffed water and blew it out, and wiped his face, forearms, head, and feet from that handful with a single wipe for each limb, dividing it: he rinsed his mouth and sniffed water and blew it out, and wiped his face, forearms, and head once, then said: 'This is the ablution of one who has not broken his state of purity,' meaning: if he wishes he may perform ablution, and if he wishes he may not.
