"The Prophet (S) turned (finished the prayer) after two (Rak'ah), so Dhul-Yadain said: 'Has the prayer been shortened or have you forgotten O Messenger of Allah?" The Prophet (S) said: 'Is what Dhul-Yadain said the truth?' The people said yes, so Messenger of Allah (S) stood to perform the last two (Rakah) of Salat, then he said the Taslim. Then he said the Takbir and prostrated in a manner the same or longer than his (normal) prostrations."

machine translationAbū ʿĪsā said: On this topic there are also narrations from ʿImrān b. Ḥuṣayn, Ibn ʿUmar and Dhū al-Yadayn. Abū ʿĪsā said: The hadith of Abū Hurayrah is a good and sound (ḥasan ṣaḥīḥ) hadith. The people of knowledge differed about this hadith. Some of the people of Kufa said: If a person speaks during the prayer, whether forgetfully, ignorantly or otherwise, he must repeat the prayer. They argued that this hadith was before speech in the prayer was prohibited. He said: As for al-Shāfiʿī, he regarded this as a sound hadith and held to it. He said: This is sounder than the hadith narrated from the Prophet ﷺ about the fasting person who eats forgetfully, that he does not have to make up the fast, and that it is only provision that Allah provided him. Al-Shāfiʿī said: These people distinguished between deliberate and forgetful eating of the fasting person on the basis of the hadith of Abū Hurayrah. Aḥmad said regarding the hadith of Abū Hurayrah: If the imam speaks during his prayer while thinking he has completed it, and then learns that he had not completed it, he completes his prayer. But whoever speaks behind the imam while knowing that some of the prayer remains upon him, must start it over. He argued that the obligations were being increased and decreased in the time of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, so Dhū al-Yadayn only spoke while certain that his prayer had been completed. It is not like that today, and no one may speak in the sense in which Dhū al-Yadayn spoke, because the obligations today are neither increased nor decreased. Aḥmad said something similar to this statement. And Isḥāq said the same as the statement of Aḥmad on this topic.

- Ibn ʿAbd al-Barr
machine translationIf someone says: the hadith of Dhū l-Yadayn is inconsistent (muḍṭarib), because Ibn ʿUmar and Abū Hurayrah say that he gave the salām after two units, while ʿImrān b. Ḥuṣayn says after three units, and Muʿāwiyah b. Ḥudayj says that the one who spoke was Ṭalḥah b. ʿUbaydillāh, it is said to him: their disagreement about the point of the prayer at which the salām was given is not, according to any of the people of knowledge, a disagreement that undermines their hadith, because the meaning intended by the hadith is building on the prayer after speaking. There is no difference among the people of knowledge between one who gave the salām after three or after two, because neither of them had completed his prayer. As for what is mentioned in the hadith of Muʿāwiyah b. Ḥudayj about Ṭalḥah b. ʿUbaydillāh, it is possible that Ṭalḥah and others also spoke to him, and Ṭalḥah and others speaking to him does not rule out that Dhū l-Yadayn also spoke to him. So each one reported what he heard according to what he heard.
