What scholars said about it

In their own words, as Hadith Unlocked records them. They are shown, not summarised into a grade.

machine translationYaḥyā b. Maʿīn said about Ḥajjāj: truthful (ṣadūq), not strong (laysa bi-l-qawī); he practiced concealment (yudallis) from Muḥammad b. ʿUbaydillāh al-ʿArzamī, from ʿAmr b. Shuʿayb. Ibn al-Mubārak said: Ḥajjāj used to practice concealment (yudallis), so he would narrate to us a hadith from ʿAmr b. Shuʿayb which was in fact something that al-ʿArzamī narrated, and al-ʿArzamī is abandoned (matrūk).

machine translationʿAmr b. Shuʿayb: there is disagreement about him in this report. Al-Ḥajjāj b. Arṭāh, al-Muthannā b. al-Ṣabbāḥ, Muḥammad b. ʿAjlān and ʿAbdullāh b. Lahīʿah narrated it from ʿAmr b. Shuʿayb, from his father, from his grandfather, from ʿUmar, from the Prophet ﷺ. Yaḥyā b. Saʿīd al-Anṣārī narrated it from ʿAmr b. Shuʿayb, and there is disagreement about him as well: Ismāʿīl b. ʿAyyāsh narrated it from Yaḥyā b. Saʿīd, from ʿAmr b. Shuʿayb, from his father, from his grandfather. ʿAlī b. Mushir narrated it from Yaḥyā b. Saʿīd, from ʿAmr b. Shuʿayb, from his father, from ʿUmar. Mālik b. Anas, Ḥammād b. Salamah, Abū Khālid al-Aḥmar, Hushaym, Yazīd b. Hārūn and others narrated it from Yaḥyā b. Saʿīd, from ʿAmr b. Shuʿayb as a mursal report from ʿUmar, from the Prophet ﷺ. Likewise ʿAbd al-Karīm Abū Umayyah narrated it from ʿAmr b. Shuʿayb, also as a mursal report from ʿUmar. The mursal version is more likely to be correct.
