Notes

machine translationAbū ʿĪsā said: This is a good and sound (ḥasan ṣaḥīḥ) hadith. "Water is from water" applied only at the beginning of Islam, then it was abrogated afterwards. Likewise, more than one of the Companions of the Prophet ﷺ narrated it, among them Ubayy b. Kaʿb and Rāfiʿ b. Khadīj. The practice according to most of the people of knowledge is that when a man has intercourse with his wife in the private part, ghusl becomes obligatory for both of them, even if neither ejaculates.

What scholars said about it

In their own words, as Hadith Unlocked records them. They are shown, not summarised into a grade.

  • Ibn Ḥajar al-ʿAsqalānī

machine translationIbn Khuzaymah and Ibn Ḥibbān graded it sound (ṣaḥīḥ). Al-Ismāʿīlī said: It is sound (ṣaḥīḥ) according to the criterion of al-Bukhārī. So he said, but it seems he was not aware of its defect (ʿillah), for they differed over whether al-Zuhrī heard it from Sahl. Yes, Abū Dāwūd and also Ibn Khuzaymah reported it through Abū Ḥāzim from Sahl. This chain also has another defect, which Ibn Abī Ḥātim mentioned. In sum, it is a chain fit to be used as evidence.
