Notes

What scholars said about it

In their own words, as Hadith Unlocked records them. They are shown, not summarised into a grade.

  • Ibn al-Qaṭṭān

machine translationIt is from the narration of Abū al-Zubayr from Jābir with the ambiguous "from" (muʿanʿan), not from the narration of al-Layth from him, and that is a defect. Moreover, it is from the narration of Ismāʿīl b. Muslim al-Makkī from Abū al-Zubayr, and he is very weak (ḍaʿīf jiddan).

    in جامع الترمذي, p. 1065
  • Ibn Ḥazm

machine translationA concealer of defects (mudallis), meaning Abū al-Zubayr, and it is not mentioned that he heard it from Jābir.

    in جامع الترمذي, p. 1065
  • ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. al-Jawzī

machine translationA hadith that is not sound.

    in جامع الترمذي, p. 1065
  • al-Tirmidhi

    machine translationAn authentic (ṣaḥīḥ) hadith.

    in جامع الترمذي, p. 1065

  • Dāraquṭnī

machine translationIts attribution to the Prophet (raf') is not sound. It has been narrated from Sharīk, from Abū al-Zubayr, as raised to the Prophet (marfūʿ), but that is not sound.

    in جامع الترمذي, p. 1065
  • Ibn Ḥajar al-ʿAsqalānī

machine translationIt seems the mawqūf version is more sound, and al-Nasāʾī was definitive about that.

    in جامع الترمذي, p. 1065
  • Abū ʿAbdullāh al-Ḥākim

    in جامع الترمذي, p. 1065
  • al-Tirmidhi

machine translationThis is a hadith about which the people differed. Some narrated it from Abū al-Zubayr, from Jābir, as marfūʿ. Ashʿath b. Sawwār and more than one other narrated it from Abū al-Zubayr, from Jābir, as mawqūf. It seems the mawqūf version is more sound.

    in جامع الترمذي, p. 1065
  • Aḥmad ibn Shuʿayb al-Nasāʾī

machine translationThe mawqūf version is more likely to be correct.

    in جامع الترمذي, p. 1065
  • Dāraquṭnī

machine translationThere is disagreement about raising the hadith to the Prophet from ʿAṭāʾ. Ibn al-Ṣabbāḥ raised it from him, while Muḥammad b. Isḥāq made it mawqūf, narrating it from ʿAṭāʾ, from Jābir as his own statement. It is also narrated from Abū al-Zubayr, from Jābir: Yaḥyā b. Abī Unaysah gave it a connected chain to the Prophet from him, while Ismāʿīl b. Muslim made it mawqūf from Abū al-Zubayr, from Jābir as his statement. It is narrated from Sharīk, from Abū al-Zubayr, from Jābir as marfūʿ, but that is not sound.

    in جامع الترمذي, p. 1065
  • Ibn al-Qaṭṭān

    in جامع الترمذي, p. 1065
  • al-Tirmidhi

machine translationThis is a hadith in which the people differed (iḍṭarabū). Some of them narrated it from Abū al-Zubayr, from Jābir, from the Prophet ﷺ as a raised report (marfūʿ). Ashʿath b. Sawwār and more than one other narrated it from Abū al-Zubayr, from Jābir, as a halted report (mawqūf). Muḥammad b. Isḥāq narrated it from ʿAṭāʾ b. Abī Rabāḥ, from Jābir, as a halted report (mawqūf). It seems that this is more authentic (aṣaḥḥ) than the raised (marfūʿ) hadith.

    in جامع الترمذي, p. 1065
  • al-Tirmidhi

    in جامع الترمذي, p. 1065
  • Ibn Ḥajar al-ʿAsqalānī

    in جامع الترمذي, p. 1065
  • Aḥmad ibn Shuʿayb al-Nasāʾī

machine translationThe mawqūf version is more authentic (aṣaḥḥ).

    in جامع الترمذي, p. 1065
  • Dāraquṭnī

machine translationIts attribution to the Prophet ﷺ (raf') is not sound.

    in جامع الترمذي, p. 1065
  • al-Tirmidhi

    in سنن الترمذي, p. 1032
  • al-Tirmidhi
