machine translationAbū ʿĪsā said: I asked Muḥammad about this ḥadīth, and he said: This ḥadīth is a mistake; Muḥammad b. Bakr erred in it. This ḥadīth is only narrated from Yūnus, from al-Zuhrī, that the Prophet ﷺ, Abū Bakr and ʿUmar used to walk in front of the funeral. Al-Zuhrī said: Sālim informed me that his father used to walk in front of the funeral. Muḥammad said: And this is more sound (aṣaḥḥ).

  • Ibn ʿAbd al-Barr

machine translationWahb Allāh b. Rāshid also narrated from Yūnus, from al-Zuhrī, a ḥadīth on this subject in which he erred in both its chain and its text. Likewise Muḥammad b. Bakr al-Bursānī narrated it from Yūnus, from al-Zuhrī, from Anas. This is a mistake about which there is no doubt; I do not know from whom it came. Yūnus's narration of this ḥadīth is only from al-Zuhrī, from Sālim, as a mursal report. Some narrate it from him, from al-Zuhrī, from Sālim, from his father, as a connected (musnad) report, but those who narrate it from him as mursal are more numerous and better memorizers. As for the saying "and behind it", it is not sound in this ḥadīth; it is a rejected (munkar) wording in it that none of its narrators say.
