Thulathiyyat (Musnad Ahmad) 258

Translation

Muḥammad ibn Ḥāṭib al-Jumaḥī (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) ﷺ said, “What distinguishes the lawful from the unlawful [in marriage] is the tambourine and the sound in the marriage.” [It is also related by Shuʿbah, from Abū Balj, that he said:] I said to Muḥammad ibn Ḥāṭib, “I have married two women without the tambourine being beaten for me.” He said, “How poorly you have done! The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) ﷺ said, ‘What distinguishes the lawful from the unlawful is the sound’ “ — meaning the beating of the tambourine. Reference: Musnad Aḥmad 258
